As our Innovation Engineer, you will work as part of a multi-functional, self-directed project team to support technical process innovation efforts in North America. 

 

This position will work closely with Innovation resources, pilot plant operations and technical managers, plant engineering and corporate quality assurance teams, and external vendors to ensure robust processes are in place to bring new products to market safely, on time, with excellent quality and support the organization’s productivity and growth mission.

 

You will also be responsible for providing engineering expertise and support to TPD project teams.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Ensure safe work practices and engineering designs are integrated into all project work.
  • Owns the technology roadmap for AWI’s new ACOUSTIBUILT product platform that is focused on meeting strategic targets aligned with its MGPP.
  • Co-ordinate various projects on the roadmap that impact production and installation of AcoustiBuilt.
  • Work with marketing roles to ensure accurate installation instructions and technical documents/media are implemented.
  • Be proficient in use of the AGILE methodology and other LEAN tools where applicable.
  • Utilize a “hands-on” approach where necessary to advance product and process understand with the intent to drive to a faster and more robust solution.
  • Able to work with broader Technology organization, ISS, manufacturing plants, suppliers and customers.
  • Drive innovation in product development and methods of installation that reduce the time of installation ultimately lowering the overall costs for our customers.
  • Lead development projects that expand current product capabilities and provide new technical solutions for integrating superior acoustical performance into interior and exterior ceiling systems.
  • Develop novel mechanical and material designs of parts, assemblies, and systems that comply with industry standards and regulations while meeting desired acoustic performance targets.
  • Support testing though the acoustics laboratory, including test plan creation, design of fixtures and supporting hardware for mounting test samples, and testing analysis.
  • Apply scientific methods (DOE, Root Cause Analysis, Statistical Analysis, structured experimentation, product design, scale to commercialization, etc.) to solve complex problems and further AWI technical competencies in airborne sound attenuation.
  • Evaluates and develops manufacturing processes by applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials; conferring with equipment vendors; soliciting observations from operators.
  • Leverage Capital Engineering, Process Innovation, and Reliability & Maintenance teams to quickly find and apply the best solutions to technical challenges.
  • Follow the Armstrong Project Management Process in all aspects of the TPD process.
  • Training and guiding technicians.
  • Participate in Lean events to continually improve the effectiveness of AWI’s product development process.
  • Participate in AWI Technical Networks and share best practices across the organization.

 

What will make you successful:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in applied sciences including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Technology, Industrial Engineering, or Applied Physics.
  • 3+ years of engineering experience, including 2+ years of experience conducting acoustical research, consulting, and/or product design.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with rapid prototyping machinery including CNC, laser cutting, 5 axis milling equipment and 3D printing. Familiarity with Building Information Modeling software.
  • Simulation and/or modeling expertise. New Product Development.
  • Applying technical knowledge in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with 3D modeling software like AutoCAD LT, SketchUp Pro, Autodesk Revit etc.
  • Acoustical modeling, theoretical computation, and FEA competency a plus.
  • Experience in applying science fundamentals to manufacturing processes and/or product commercialization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and in collaborative settings. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Intellectual curiosity, creativity, tenacity, resourcefulness and outstanding problem-solving skills
  • Project management experience
