The estimated base salary range for this role is “$60,000 to $70,000” per year.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Warehouse/Shipping Supervisor position is responsible for the day-to-day planning and operation of their assigned department. This position manages the completion of customer orders from both production and inventory. It also oversees all departmental operations in a manner that enhances the plant’s safety, engagement, cost, productivity, efficiency, quality, and customer service.

What you’ll do

Manufacturing Supervisor

  • Actively manages the operations of the 900 George Street manufacturing facility and directs the team lead and shop floor employees to successful execution of the goals.
  • Responsible for training and mentoring their team lead in the supervisor duties so that team lead can cover all items in this job description in the supervisor’s absence.
  • Requests time off in a manner not to conflict with the team lead.
  • Utilizes the finished and semi-finished materials inventory for the economical completion of orders.
  • Ensures all completed products are quality compliant and packaged in a manner consistent with our No Shipping Damage code.
  • Works with the 1st shift production planner, scheduler, and Operations Manager daily to ensure that scheduling and assigning of departmental employees is completed in the most efficient manner possible.
  • Ensures that production areas are consistent with 5S Lean practices.
  • Meets daily with the other Manufacturing Supervisors and Operations Manager to plan and schedule labor for the 2nd shift and the next production day.
  • Quickly adapts and directs team to adapt to schedule changes as needed.
  • Responsible for Kronos timekeeping system, must ensure that time approvals follow handbook and leave policies.
  • Owns the admin work (e.g., timekeeping, leave issues, manpower planning & overtime scheduling), training & development, performance management to include discipline.
  • Completes pick tickets for large consumption items such as plywood, Poplar lumber and particleboard cores used for drilling and turns those into the Inventory Control Clerk.
  • Recommends warehousing methods to enhance “recut-resize” and damage-free storage for stock.
  • Maintains the daily product report systems for cost control and inventory.
  • Conducts training and updates for direct reports and retains signed documentation for attendees.
  • Update Training Matrix monthly in SharePoint

General Supervisor

  • Drives workgroup to proactively achieve zero injuries / safety incidents.
  • Resources shift to safely meet production goals.
  • Maximizes quality and quantity of custom products to satisfy customer needs.
  • Minimizes controllable costs.
  • Sustains high levels of product quality with a target of zero quality defects or complaints.
  • Communicates expectations and holds team members accountable for delivering exceptional performance results.
  • Manages crew training and ensures cross training and skill depth of associates.
  • Fosters an environment that promotes teamwork and inclusion.
  • Maintains plant housekeeping expectations.

Safety

  • Ensures employees completion of all required safety training.
  • Leads execution of monthly team safety requirements – including completion of monthly risk assessments, behavior-based safety observations, first aid and near miss reporting, safe work permits, safety meetings, pre-shift safety inspections, departmental inspections, etc.
  • Educates and coaches team members on safe operating procedures and behaviors
  • Effectively communicates the company’s stand on safety throughout the Operations Department to ensure employees believe in and behave in a manner that supports our stand that all accidents are preventable, safety is everyone’s responsibility, and that working safely is a condition of employment.
  • Performs reporting and investigation of all safety incidents, driving to root cause and permanent resolution.

Quality

  • Understands and communicates customer expectations throughout the Operations Department and ensures all products meet customer standards and requirements.
  • Ensures timely and accurate production to schedules to meet or exceed delivery to promise.
  • Ensures operational procedures are followed to product specifications and quality metrics meet customers’ needs.
  • Performs root cause analysis with the involvement of operators on all quality issues and resolve.
  • Trains operators on problem solving skills and coaches through resolution.

Lead and Develop Talent

  • Monitors and enforces all plant and corporate policies and procedures.
  • Provides candid feedback on expectations and performance to all members of team on regular basis.
  • Conducts yearly reviews for all reports.
  • Actively leads and builds effective work teams to increase plant performance and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintains documentation, tracks, counsels, and executes coaching and corrective action when performance issues occur.
  • Reviews, tracks, and modifies individual training plans based on individual and shift needs.

Cost

  • In conjunction with the Plant Quality and CI Manager, creates and updates standard work with the involvement of operators.
  • Creates and audits work instructions for all operations occurring in the department(s).
  • Leverages standard work to minimize variation and waste.
  • Develops and implements productivity projects / programs to enhance processes.
  • Drives waste out of operation.
  • Ensures resources (labor, materials, and time) are utilized appropriately to meet production goals.
  • Executes role redesign, as required.
  • Gathers input from and engages all team members in productivity initiatives.

Administrative Processes

  • Inputs and/or verifies timecard records.
  • Solicits overtime, when necessary, to satisfy operational needs.
  • Verifies operational data in production tracking systems on the computer (Excel, etc.).
  • Composes daily end-of-shift production completions in an e-mail format and sends to the distribution list prior to closing the plant.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Direct supervision of 10 – 20 hourly production employees

 

What will make you successful

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (required).
  • 3+ years of technical experience in a manufacturing environment. 
  • Supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Experience using the application of Lean methodologies. 
  • Experience using 5 Why Root Cause Methodology.
  • Well-developed computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; team player.
  • Self-starter with a strong ability to multi-task and juggle multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to work in an industrial environment (i.e., ability to wear required PPE, work in a dusty, hot, non-climate-controlled environment; with stairs, frequent walking, standing and occasional lifting of material).
  • Ability to work off shift hours in support of plant initiatives.

 

What will make you stand out

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical discipline from an accredited college or university (preferred).
  • SAP experience

  1. Office Environment – This position operates in a professional office environment and is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. No PPE is required.
  2. Plant Environment – This position operates in a manufacturing setting and can be subject to extreme cold and hot temperatures; uneven walking surfaces with cords, tools, and other obstacles; intermittent loud noises; and dusty or dirty conditions.  Required PPE includes hard hat (when required), gasketed safety glasses, earplugs, steel toe/composite boots, and fall protection.
