The estimated base salary range for this role is “$105,000 to $130,000” per year.  
Individual pay is based upon location, skills and expertise, experience and other relevant factors

Armstrong World Industries (AWI) is seeking an Architectural Engineer to join the Building Science team – a team dedicated to driving profitable growth opportunities by optimizing building performance, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort in the built environment.  This position involves close collaboration with internal teams and external partners to identify macro and industry trends impacting our business, define business opportunities in traditional and new markets, and develop solutions that align with AWI’s strategic growth priorities. The Principal Engineer will report directly to the Manager of Building Science.

 

Building Science: A multidisciplinary field that applies knowledge from various areas such as physics, chemistry, engineering, architecture, and the life sciences to create better indoor environmental quality, energy-efficient buildings, and occupant comfort and satisfaction. It involves understanding the physical behavior of buildings as systems and how this impacts energy efficiency, durability, comfort, and indoor air quality.

What you’ll do

  1. Technical Expertise:
    • Conduct detailed analysis and evaluation of building systems, including HVAC, lighting, and controls, to optimize performance and energy efficiency
    • Perform energy modeling, simulations, and calculations to assess building performance and recommended improvements
    • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and customers to develop sustainable building designs that integrate architectural aesthetics with functional and efficient building systems
    • Research and stay current on emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in building systems engineering and sustainable design
    • Provide technical expertise and guidance on building codes, standards, and regulations related to building systems and sustainability
  2. Market Insights:
    • Engage with internal stakeholders and external partners to understand and define opportunities in the built environment
    • Provide data-driven market trends, customer needs, and competitive landscapes to identify growth opportunities
    • Leverage market insights, customer feedback, and industry trends to influence solution development
  3. Operating Plan:
    • Lead and/or support efforts in finding high-valued customer solutions with a focus on building system performance and its impact on the occupant
    • Prioritizes concepts, by attractiveness and relevance to AWI, that is inclusive of input from various internal and external sources
    • Effectively communicates with Sr Leaders on opportunities and investments including executive level summaries and presentations
  4. Safety, Environmental, and Sustainability
    • Ensures compliance to Armstrong policies and regulatory standards
    • Leads by example in developing a mindset and culture of zero injuries based on risk assessment (ability to see risks) and risk tolerance (passion to remove risks)

 

Travel:  Moderate travel required; 15-20%

 

What will make you successful

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.  
  • 5+ years of experience in building systems design, energy modeling, or related fields
  • Proficiency in building simulation software (e.g., EnergyPlus, eQUEST, IES VE) and CAD/BIM tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit)
  • Proficiency in laboratory techniques and analytical instruments. Strong understanding of HVAC systems, building automation, renewable energy technologies, and sustainable design principles
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience with project management, preferably Agile, to efficiently lead and execute research projects
  • Exceptional presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Self-motivated with an innovative mindset and a passion for bringing new ideas into the organization and driving technological advancements

  • Experience working in the building materials industry
  • Knowledge of codes and standards (ASTM, ASHRAE, etc.)
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations or associations
  • Certifications related to building systems engineering, energy efficiency, or sustainability. Examples include LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), CEM (Certified Energy Manager), BEMP (Building Energy Modeling Professional), and others
  • Experience working in the manufacturing industry
