The estimated base salary range for this role is “$90,000 to $125,000” per year.  
Individual pay is based upon location, skills and expertise, experience and other relevant factors (salary may be adjusted based on geographic location)

Armstrong World Industries (AWI) is seeking a Building Energy Modeling Researcher to join the Building Science team – a team dedicated to driving profitable growth opportunities by optimizing building performance, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort in the built environment.  This position will play a key role in advancing our product development efforts by conducting energy simulations, developing innovative energy-efficient solutions, and providing technical expertise to support our building products portfolio.  Reporting directly to the Manager of Building Science, the Building Energy Modeling Researcher will be responsible for the following key areas.

What you will be doing

  1. Technical Expertise:
    • Perform building energy simulations and analyses using energy modeling tools (e.g., EnergyPlus, eQuest, TRNSYS, etc.) to evaluate the performance of building systems and products
    • Develop and validate energy models for new and existing building products, identifying opportunities for improved energy efficiency and sustainability
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product development, engineering, and Energy Saving Ceilings business teams, to integrate energy-efficient technologies into new product designs
    • Conduct research on emerging technologies, materials, and standards related to energy efficiency in the built environment
    • Analyze energy usage patterns, perform cost-benefit analysis, and recommend design modifications to optimize energy performance
    • Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate findings and support data-driven decisions
    • Stay current with industry trends, codes, and regulations related to building energy performance (e.g., ASHRAE standards, LEED certification, etc.)
    • Contribute to the development of R&D strategies related to energy efficiency and sustainability in building products
  2. Operating Plan:
    • Lead and/or support efforts in finding high-valued customer solutions with a focus on building system performance and its impact on the occupant
    • Prioritize concepts, by attractiveness and relevance to AWI, that is inclusive of input from various internal and external sources
    • Effectively communicates with leadership on opportunities and investments including executive level summaries and presentations
    • Have accountability for ongoing activities or objectives
  3. Safety, Environmental, and Sustainability
    • Ensures compliance to Armstrong policies and regulatory standards
    • Leads by example in developing a mindset and culture of zero injuries based on risk assessment (ability to see risks) and risk tolerance (passion to remove risks)

 

What will make you successful

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Science, Energy Engineering, or a related field
  • In-depth knowledge of Building Energy Modeling (7-10 years of experience) that includes simulation and analysis.
  • Ability to work independently or with minimal guidance.
  • Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience
  • Proficiency in energy modeling software (e.g., EnergyPlus, eQuest, TRNSYS, or similar)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and provide actionable insights
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency standards, codes, and regulations (e.g., ASHRAE, LEED, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing technical reports and delivering presentations
  • Experience with HVAC systems, renewable energy technologies, or sustainable building practices is a plus
  • Self-motivated with an innovative mindset and a passion for bringing new ideas into the organization and driving technological advancements

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or Revit for reviewing building plans and mechanical drawings
