Armstrong World Industries (AWI) has a job opportunity for an Operations Excellence (Lean) Champion. The Operations Excellence Champion will partner with business and plant management teams in identifying Lean improvement opportunities and lead, manage and execute projects from conception through to completion. This highly visible role, will drive safety, quality, service and cost improvements.  The Operations Excellence Champion will be responsible for multiple projects and sites based on business need.  Travel ranges from 25-50% depending upon planned initiatives.


Key Responsibilities of the Operations Excellence Champion:

  • Lead and develop continuous improvement methodologies while driving their use in the organization
  • Lead and work with organizational leadership to identify Lean / Six Sigma learning needs
  • Develop and leverage process maps, metrics, and control plans for key business processes to help the business to identify, realize, and track the business and economic benefit of a project and drive sustainability of results across the network
  • Assume the role of coach, consultant, participant, and/or lead for Kaizen events
  • Apply ‘learning through doing’ model by application of key tools and management systems to solve critical business issues. (Gemba, Standard Work, Kaizen, 5S, TPM, Visual Management, Hoshin Kanri, SMED, Yamazumi, Kamishibai, Yokoten, etc.)     
  • Integrate with maintenance and reliability methodologies throughout organization
  • Provide regular activity reports to plant and corporate leadership


Required Qualifications for the Operations Excellence Champion:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Operations Management, or equivalent experience  
  • 5+ years’ experience as a senior operations leader (Business Unit Leader or Production Manager)
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills
  • Hands on experience in Lean, Six Sigma or Process Improvement and driving Lean manufacturing initiatives in complex manufacturing facilities
  • Proven track record of organizational development and transformation experience
  • Proven success designing and meeting KPI goals, including reducing supply chain costs, improving through-put, shortening cycle time, and improving inventory turns
  • Demonstrated strong facilitation skills and ability to lead cross-functional teams with personal experience in leading more than ~50 Kaizen events


Desired Qualifications for the Operations Excellence Champion:

  • MBA degree
  • Experience in ceiling manufacturing 
  • Formal Lean training through accredited entity
  • PMI PMP certification
