The estimated base salary range for this role is $65,000 to $80,000 per year.  
Individual pay is based upon location, skills and expertise, experience and other relevant factors

Job Output

 

Reporting to the Architectural Specialties Engineering Manager, the Design Engineer supports the product line for MRK by providing solutions to internal and external customers through creating drawings to address issues within complex ceiling & wall systems. The incumbent utilizes 2D & 3D design software and provides practical contributions in the skillful translation of design layouts into detailed drawings and perform take-offs as required in the development of projects from inception through order completion. This position supports the plant in driving growth of Architectural Specialties (AS) Metals business in Americas.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Engineering Design

 

  • Reviews building plans identifying products and components to prepare for production.
  • Creates & maintains CAD library drawing files under direct supervision and take projects through all engineering design, documentation and work aids from release through manufacturing.
  • Prepares 2D & 3D drawings and/or work order packages for production teams. Work directly with machine programmer to ensure tooling requirements.
  • Provides production teams with supporting documentation as required on a job-by-job basis. Work directly with Fabrication Manager for project priority, scope and requirements.
  • Interprets architectural drawings provided by end customer.
  • Problem solves issues discovered in drawing review process.
  • Inspects drawing submitted by newer employees for accuracy and adherence to drafting standards.
  • Coordinates, processes, and tracks orders through various stages of the manufacturing process.
  • Develops internal procedures and practices to be implemented within the engineering department, pending review by management.
  • Brainstorms technical design concepts and owns the execution of design concepts throughout the development cycle
  • Generates innovative solutions with cross-functional team members
  • Communicates and negotiates critical design details to team members, customers and sales teams
  • Leverages in-depth design experience in sheet metal, extrusion, metal stamping, die-casting and/or parts design
  • Responsible for the project costing to meet target budget levels

 

Growth & Business Development

 

  • Builds relationships with internal and external customers including contractors, distributors, architects and selling teams
  • Supports selling teams by providing product and technical expertise in a timely manner
  • Evaluates and prioritizes project opportunities that drive profitable growth & enhanced/compliment AS capabilities
  • Partners with project managers, design and sales reps to aggressively develop project design successes on top priority promotional opportunities
  • Identifies new product ideas, product installation or performance improvements

 

Other

 

  • Participates and collaborates with team to filter/screen new projects in the schematic design phase (2-3 years from sale).
  • Identify opportunities to drive improved margin and profitability thru effective project design and greater knowledge of pricing expectations.
  • Provides insight and technical support to new capability projects that enables estimators to effectively bid projects quickly
  • Provides pre-construction support services to certified contractors including reviewing construction & shop drawings.

Qualifications

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and design for manufacturing. 
  • Knowledge of BIM/RIVET, AutoCAD/2-D & 3-D renderings a requirement
  • Knowledge of Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Vault.
  • Experience with sheet metal design and fabrication to include curved sheet metal and aluminum extrusion.
  • Proficient in MS Office (emphasis on MS Excel expertise).
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven experience in a customer-facing role
  • Superior organizational & communication skills, attention to detail and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment

  1. Office Environment – This position operates in a professional office environment and is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. No PPE is required.

 

  1. Plant Environment – This position operates in a manufacturing setting and can be subject to extreme cold and hot temperatures; uneven walking surfaces with cords, tools and other obstacles; intermittent loud noises; and dusty or dirty conditions.  Required PPE includes: Hard hat (when required), safety glasses, earplugs, steel toe/composite boots, and fall protection.

 

Education and/or Experience

 

  • Associate’s degree in computer-aided design or similar specialty, engineering, or computer science OR equivalent work experience is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Three to five years of relevant design work experience in manufacturing or commercial construction industries.
