Job Output:   Under the direction of the EHS Manager, this position will be responsible for performing tasks that will be critical to supporting the safe operation of the production of mineral wool for the facility in accordance with company guidelines and customer requirements. Performance associated with tasks is critical to the Safety, Quality and Reliability of the plant environmental systems. The position of Lab Tech – Environmental will work to identify and resolve any environmental issue or related problem on a day-to-day basis. This position will report to the EHS Manager, with frequent direction and guidance. 

 

Key Process (Ownership / Participation) Include the following.  Other duties may be assigned. 

 

Drive Daily Reliability Performance on the Environmental Systems (50%) 

 

  • Ensure day-to-day compliance with facility environmental metrics to meet environmental compliance requirements. 
  • Must report daily metrics and progress of problem-solving through Gemba process.  
  • Is the key owner and driver of Standardized Work System through common lean tools and methodologies for the environmental systems:  (5 Why, 5S, and Standard Work) 
  • Drives the 5S System focus for Water Treatment, Chemical Room/Storage, Pump Room, Baghouse areas.  

 

Complete Tasks for the Monthly Environmental Compliance Calendar (20%) 

 

  • Collect monthly slag samples for MnO reporting. 
  • Collect wastewater and stormwater samples per compliance calendar. 
  • Perform monthly environmental inspections. (i.e. SPCC, SWPPP, Visible Emissions, GPP) 
  • Complete inspections of facility’s hazardous and residual waste locations (i.e. Waste Totes, Spill Containments, Waste Drums, Universal Waste Area) 

 

Ensure the Safe Operation of Tasks on the Environmental Systems (30%) 

 

  • Perform all work tasks in a safe manner following safety procedures. (i.e. Lockout/Tagout Procedures, Risk Assessments, and support safety team structure) 
  • Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) for work area and other areas of the plant. 
  • Identifies and mitigates risk in the workplace – Report to Supervisor for work order creation. 
  • Ensures efficient baghouse change-outs, chemical inventory, and carbon change-outs. 
  • Perform necessary maintenance, cleaning, and change-outs on environmental systems. 
  • Monitors and controls water chemical addition and usage  
  • Collects and analyzes all needed wastewater and baghouse parameters daily.  
  • Point person that identifies and participates in the correction of Environmental plant issues.  
  • Raw Material Loading and Handling of Slag (If No Environmental Issues Exist) 

 

 

Qualifications: 

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   

 

  • Must understand basic lean tools and principles in meeting daily plant environmental goals. (Standardized Work, 5Why, etc.) 
  • Must be willing to work to accomplish tasks and have an excellent balance between team-based task completion and individual based task completion. 
  • Must be Computer literate, including but not limited to the following:  MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point, Outlook 
  • Ability to read graphs, gauges, and tape measures proficiently. 
  • Ability to read and follow Standard Operating Procedures. 
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot basic mechanical systems such as pumps, valves, and piping for the effective operation of the water systems. 
  • Ability to obtain Visible Emission Reader Certification. 
  • Ability to successfully complete lift truck training and operator evaluation. 

 

Educational Requirement:  High School graduate or GED, plus at least 3 years of environmental experience with demonstrated knowledge of environmental processes.  

Wastewater Operator Experience – Preferred  

 

Organizational Relationships: 

  • Direct report to the EHS Manager. 
  • Works with support team to assure any environmental related issues are addressed. 
  • Works closely with shift supervisor, engineer support staff, and maintenance employees.
